Win the Home Weatherization Raffle

Hello Acton Forum readers! Here's a blog enttry that's an invitation: If you play your cards right, you could have a dozen volunteers for a three-hour work session (under the guidance of skilled team leaders) to reduce your energy bill. We will reduce drafts, install water-saving devices, replace those hard-to-reach incandescent light bulbs with efficient ones, and more.

The homeowner pays only for the materials (averaging $200-$500, depending on the work she or he chooses to have done), and can expect to save up to 10% on utility bills going forward. All that volunteer labor is free!

When was the last time you heard about a barn raising in New England? Green Acton wants to bring back this tradition–with a twist. Instead of raising walls and a roof, Green Acton will help one lucky homeowner raise energy efficiency through weatherization.

Why would we do this? The two biggest sources of greenhouse gases in Acton are residential energy use, and transportation. Reducing residential energy use is a great place to focus volunteer time and energy because the homeowner saves money, and the volunteers get to make a concrete contribution to reducing Acton's greenhouse gas emissions, and learn valuable skills they can apply to their own homes, or other homes. It's a win all around. We're starting with one house at first - maybe that's yours? We are especially looking for houses with big energy bills - so we can make an impact.
